John is a construction worker living paycheck to paycheck with his elderly father. With Covid 19, he’s lost his only source of income. We talked to him when he called in worried, advising him to save his credit and look through the options he currently has available.
To start with, we went online to get John the most recent information from the Government on support for the self-employed. We did this while on the phone to make sure he felt fully supported. HMRC have stated that payments will not be made until June 2020, meaning the only way to get money was to apply for Universal Credit. We helped John as he’s not confident using the internet, but he had been kept on hold for so long he had to stop, so we filled out the online form with him.
John struggles with alcoholism and is a smoker, and also lacks basic life skills such as being able to cook. This will now become more challenging with social distancing and have an impact on his physical and mental health. He’s also lost his usual way of socialising, the pub. Being unable to provide cash could lead him into depression, so it’s more important than ever that we help him receive Universal Credit.
